Please remember if you have been laid off, are in self-isolation, self-quarantine, or have child-care needs preventing you from working you can apply for Employment Insurance (EI). Service Canada handles the processing of EI claims and benefit payments through the Canada.ca website.

Apply for EI as soon as you stop working. You do not need to wait for your Record of Employment to submit your EI application.

To submit an application, visit Canada.ca. Select Employment Insurance and Leave, and then click on the type of benefits that best suits your situation. The majority will select Regular Benefits; it is important to note when you reach the Reference Code section the you will be asked, “Are you part of a group of employees in an Apprenticeship Program, a Work-Sharing Program, a Group Layoff Situation (including layoffs due to a natural disaster), or the Automotive Industry and were you given a reference code to submit with this application?” You must select “no” as Service Canada is not issuing Reference Codes due to the large amount of applications. At the end of the online application process, you will be presented with a confirmation page. It contains a lot of useful information, including the next steps. Take some time to read all the information.

Your record of employment has been/will be submitted electronically to Service Canada. You can retrieve your Record of Employment, should you need it using the My Service Canada Account portal.
